My Personal Story

I become passionate about advocating for youth when my son was in the 4th grade and struggled with test-taking anxiety. He would get migraines and have to miss school because he was so overwhelmed with tests. He also struggled with organizational skills. That’s when I realized that maybe he was dealing with ADD. It took me a year to research ADD. We started off by cutting out his sugar intake and red dye 40-prone foods. We did this for about 6 weeks. There wasn’t a significant difference. So we sought out professional help from an ADHD specialist. He underwent several assessments. It was then that we found out that he fell into the ADD category and my observations were consistent with the doctor’s diagnosis. This work has helped me become more of an advocate for my child as a parent and an advocate for students that I serve as an educator.
